To make best use of the GROW Model, questioning skill is important.  The following are coaching questions are commonly used in the framework of the four-step GROW model.

The following questions can be used to gain clarity about coachees’ goals:

  • What do you want to achieve in this coaching session?
  • What would you like to accomplish?
  • What result are you looking for?
  • What do you really want?
  • What would be the ideal outcome?
  • What do you want to change?
  • Why are these goals important to you?
  • What would be the benefits to you if this goal is achieved?

The following coaching questions are aimed to clarify the current situation:

  • What happened? (what, when, who, etc.)?
  • What is the effect of this?
  • On a scale of 1 to 10, where are you?
  • On a scale of 1 to 10, how urgent is the situation?
  • Have you already done for reaching your goal?
  • What have you achieved so far?
  • What is working well?
  • What is not working?
  • What is stopping you?
  • What do you think was really happening?
  • What did you learn from this?
  • If someone said that to you, what would you feel?

These coaching questions are designed to help your coachee exploring different options and solutions:

  • What could be your first step?
  • What else could you do?
  • What could you do differently?
  • What would happen if you choose to do nothing?
  • What is the most challenging part for you?
  • What would you gain by doing that?
  • What would you lose by doing that?
  • What would be the best thing about this option?
  • Who else might be able to help in this situation?
  • What do you think you need to do to get closer to the goal?
  • If everything is possible, what could you do?
