Coaching Questions with GROW Mode

The GROW Model

A simple four-step coaching process that commonly used by professional coaches


Many leaders and managers use GROW Model to structure coaching sessions with their team members.

 

The GROW Model can be used for improving team members’ performance, enhancing relationship, solving problems, making better decisions, acquiring new skills and competencies, and reaching one’s career goals.

 

To make best use of the GROW Model, questioning skill is important.  The following are coaching questions are commonly used in the framework of the four-step GROW model.

Goal

The following questions can be used to gain clarity about coachees’ goals:

 

  • What do you want to achieve in this coaching session?
  • What would you like to accomplish?
  • What result are you looking for?
  • What do you really want?
  • What would be the ideal outcome?
  • What do you want to change?
  • Why are these goals important to you?
  • What would be the benefits to you if this goal is achieved?

 

Reality

The following coaching questions are aimed to clarify the current situation:

 

  • What happened? (what, when, who, etc.)?
  • What is the effect of this?
  • On a scale of 1 to 10, where are you?
  • On a scale of 1 to 10, how urgent is the situation?
  • Have you already done for reaching your goal?
  • What have you achieved so far?
  • What is working well?
  • What is not working?
  • What is stopping you?
  • What do you think was really happening?
  • What did you learn from this?
  • If someone said that to you, what would you feel?

Options

These coaching questions are designed to help your coachee exploring different options and solutions:

 

  • What kind of options do you have?
  • What could be your first step?
  • What else could you do?
  • What could you do differently?
  • What would happen if you choose to do nothing?
  • What is the most challenging part for you?
  • What would you gain by doing that?
  • What would you lose by doing that?
  • What would be the best thing about this option?
  • Who else might be able to help in this situation?
  • What do you think you need to do to get closer to the goal?
  • If everything is possible, what could you do?

Will

Here are some coaching questions to encourage commitment:

 

  • What do you think you need to do now?
  • How are you going to do that?
  • On a scale of 1 to 10, what is the likelihood of committing the plan?
  • What would it take to make it a 10?
  • Is there anything else you can do?
  • What resources do you need?
  • What support do you need to get that done?
  • Where can you find that resources?
  • When are you going to start?
  • How will you know you have achieved your goals?
  • What are 3 actions you would like to take in this week?
